Passing the Million-mile Mark

November 24, 2011

(from social.ford.com)

Debbie Conner is a pickup truck kind of lady. She loves her F-350 truck so much that on September 12, 2011, she traded hers in for a newer F-350 – after racking up 1,060,000 miles on her 2002 model!

How did Debbie manage to log over 1,000,000 miles on her pickup truck, which she affectionately nicknamed “Old Girl?” Debbie and her husband, who live in Parker, Pennsylvania, used their F-350 to deliver camper vehicles all over the United States and Canada. With the help of her husband, a self-proclaimed Ford man through and through, Debbie took meticulous care of Old Girl, staying on top of repairs and general upkeep.

Ford expands EcoBoost in China

November 21, 2011

(from Alisa Priddle, detnews.com)

Ford Motor Co. today announced expansion of its powertrain operations in China as part of aggressive growth plans in the region.

The automaker is introducing 20 new engines and transmissions for the Chinese market by 2015 to support plans to introduce 15 new vehicles for this fast-growing market by mid-decade.

Ford is spending $1.6 billion to build four factories in China to triple its offerings in this crucial region where it holds less than 3 percent market share.

Chief executive Alan Mulally has said he wants to grow annual sales globally by 50 percent to 8 million vehicles by 2015, a goal that needs a greater presence in Asia to achieve.

The powertrain expansion centers on EcoBoost engines with direct injection and turbocharging as well as Ford’s six-speed transmissions to boost the overall fuel economy of the fleet there by more than 20 percent. Carbon dioxide emissions also will be reduced by 20 percent, which is vital in areas already fighting the efforts of smog.

“Ford is committed to be a fuel economy leader in every segment that we compete by utilizing advanced powertrain technologies. These technologies represent a core part of our near-term sustainability goals in China,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president of product development for Ford Asia Pacific and Africa.

Plans are to offer EcoBoost engines in every Ford brand passenger car in China by 2015.

The all-new 1-liter EcoBoost engine will be built in China, as well, to power small and midsize vehicles to be sold in the region.

It is the smallest engine in the EcoBoost family.

Online car buyers test drive less

November 21, 2011

(from Alan Rider, New York Times, detnews.com)

At a time when consumers have become accustomed to buying flat-screen televisions from Amazon.com without ever seeing the picture quality and ordering shoes through Zappos.com without trying them on, is it any wonder that some would buy a vehicle without ever taking a test drive?

True, the generous policies of many online retailers reduce the risks, letting items be returned with little more than the effort of repacking them for shipping and a request for credit card charges to be reversed.

It’s not nearly so simple to undo the sale of a car or a truck. So there were raised eyebrows at LeaseTrader.com, an online lease transfer service, when it discovered a significant increase in the number of people who closed a deal through its website without so much as sliding behind the steering wheel of their new vehicles.

Used Vehicle Review: Ford Fusion, 2006-2009

November 17, 2011

(from Chris Chase, autos.ca)

A car like the Ford Fusion – the mid-sized sedan launched in 2006 to replace the old Taurus – makes you wonder why Ford isn’t closer to the top of automaker brand reliability rankings. I mention this right off the top because I was surprised to see how well the Fusion’s reliability was ranked by Consumer Reports, which gives the car its “good bet” used vehicle recommendation. It’s the only domestic mid-sized sedan to earn that designation, one that it shares with family car benchmarks like the Toyota Camry (whose quality appears to be slipping of late, according to CR) and the Honda Accord. In addition to that, the first-generation Fusion has been the subject of exactly zero recalls thus far.
